Natural beauty tips that will leave you looking and feeling AMAZING!

Dry Body Brushing

 

My first insight into natural beauty methods was when I was in high school and bought my first Natural Beauty book - a resource that I have used for years (and still treasure).  It taught me about beauty methods used in different cultures, for instance the benefits of dry body brushing and hot/cold showering. Here I will share with you some of these simple techniques that will leave you feeling invigorated and looking radiant.

 

DRY BODY BRUSHING

If you can get into the habit of dry body brushing at least every week your body will thank you for it.  This technique removes dead skin cells as well as helping prevent in-grown hairs to leave your skin feeling soft and looking radiant.  Dry body brushing also stimulates the lymphatic system, a network of tiny vessels that sit just under the skin to help remove toxins from the body. When you dry body brush your lymphatic system is given a helping hand, resulting in a healthier you!  You can use either a natural bristle brush with a wooden handle or an exfoliating hand mitt.  I personally find using a mitt easier.

 

HOT/COLD SHOWERING

This technique will leave you feeling super-charged!  It is brilliant for helping your body eliminate toxins as the action of cold water on the skin closes the pores whilst hot water opens them back up.  Doing this a few times at the end of a shower (finishing on cold) will have you stepping out with an extra zing in your step and purely glowing skin!

 

SAUNA

Feel physically and mentally cleansed when using a sauna. Sitting in the hot box will raise your body temperature causing you to sweat. This simple act is wonderful for supporting your skins eliminating action whilst giving you some down time to physically and mentally relax.  In Finland bathing in a sauna is a normal part of life, with the Finn's using it as a time to bond with family and friends. It's even said Finnish business meetings are more often held in a sauna than in the office!  Finn's will often gently whip themselves with a 'vasta' - a bunch of fresh Birch twigs that is extremely good for the skin.  Although I've never used a vasta before - I can recommend the use of the Weleda Birch Body Scrub for a similar effect. 

*babies and those with serious health conditions such as open wounds or heart conditions should avoid sauna use

 

OIL PULLING 

An ancient Ayurvedic tradition that gently cleanses the mouth leading to better overall health. You take 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, pop it into your mouth and swish it around.  The aim is to get to 20 minutes but to begin with I recommend aiming for 5 minutes until you get used to it. Once the time is up you just spit the oil out (into the bin as you don't want to clog up your drain). I always follow this up with a quick tongue scrape and then brush my teeth.
Microorganisms in the mouth will be inactivated due to the anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral effects of the coconut oil. Your teeth will naturally whiten as you get rid of the organisms that cause plaque and thus yellowing of the teeth. One of the bacteria that can inhabit the mouth is Porphyromonas gingivalis.  If this bacteria remains unchecked it can migrate from the gums, into the bloodstream and end up in the heart causing heart disease.  So you see why this simple natural beauty technique should be a part of your daily routine

 

TONGUE SCRAPING

Tongue scraping is another quick yet simple technique that can easily be added to your daily self care routine.  During the night bacteria can build up on your tongue. Especially if you are sick then this can be an effective way to get well quicker.  I use Dr Tung's Tongue Cleaner which is hygienic and very convenient.

 

Try implementing some or all of these techniques over time and watch your health, the way you look and more importantly THE WAY YOU FEEL improve!
